Summer. Is. Over.

Summer is over already.  Just 8 quick weeks this year and boy did it go fast.  We made a summer bucket list again but I will admit it didn't quite live up to last year's.  We spent most of our time at Lake Tahoe or in a pool. *grin*

Summer 2014

Outside of this, the biggest event I think was my poor Rileyo who had 3 teeth pulled right out of his mouth. He was a serious trooper though. We were sent to an orthodontist by our dentist who was worried about spacial issues. The orthodontist  took many X-rays  and recommended we pull out his center 4 teeth on the bottom and in six months, the top, to prevent any future oral surgeries that were most likely to come. Adult teeth couldn't get in because they were were stuck behind 2 baby teeth and some getting ready to come in had already turned because there was nowhere for them to go. So we did it. He already had a loose tooth on bottom and the adult tooth was a bit through the gums behind it. The dentist pulled that one and one on each side also. Riley was so brave! Within 24 hours of pulling his teeth, that new adult tooth poking in was in fully and taking up two baby teeth spots. It will be a long and painful journey for Riley but a much better one than having oral surgery later, on teeth that couldn't find a way in so chose to come in through the roof of his mouth!

Riley started school last week and Emily started today. Aaron will start on Wednesday. My wonderful mom had her birthday yesterday and that means the birthday madness has officially begun! I really wanted to get a summer post up before the crazies hit and will try my best to do one more with school info soon.  Until then I hope you're having a wonderful, and wet, summer!

Winter and Spring Roundup

I was re-reading my last post before I typed this new one and realized 2 things.  One is that I haven't cleaned my shower since then.  Too much information?  Yep.  Second,  those little floating shamrocks are really obnoxious when you're trying to read.  Cute but annoying.  Noted.

Anyway...I'm trying out a cool video website I discovered during my recertification class. Here's a quick video of what we did this winter.

And since it was so easy and fun...here's another one for Aaron's birthday

Aaron's 3rd Birthday

Dave and I took him to the biggest fire station in the city.  They have the biggest trucks and the coolest stuff and they are the only station with a pole the firefighters slide down to go out on a call.  All the kids loved it.  Aaron wanted a fire truck cake for his birthday.  It was my first 3D cake and it turned out to be a bit of a mess but he was thrilled and that's what matters.

We got a chance to do a couple fun things this spring.  The first was Dave and I got to go on a 'trip' by ourselves!  We left after work on a Tuesday night and drove to California for a conference Dave was attending the following morning.  We ate breakfast together and then I drove him to his meeting place.  Do you want to know what I did while he was there?  Whatever I wanted!  For the first time in 7 years I didn't have to think about anyone but myself.  It was ammaaazzziiinnnggg.  I read a book and ate some clam chowder by the ocean.  Did I mention it was amazing?  Well it was.

The other thing we got to do was go camping with the kids.  It was.....well the kids had fun!  Poor Riley left with 13 mosquito bites on his face and Dave 3 times that on his back-and he was wearing a shirt and we were all bug sprayed! The kids loved it despite the mosquitos.

I just realized that Easter happened since I last posted too.  We had every member of family in Reno at our house from both my side and Dave's.  I loved it!  How about I shut up and just show you another video?  I think so too.

Easter 2014

Ok.  Only 2 more things and then I'm done-promise.  Emily had her first dance recital and spent the entire thing standing next to me like a statue.  Hey, it happens.  She got a medal and a certificate and that made her incredibly happy.

The biggest event ever was Riley graduating Kindergarten!  He too got freaked out during his performance for graduation but he stuck it out and did his thaaang.  So proud of that boy.  I try very hard not to think about the fact that he will be gone all day every day in just 7 short weeks.  I'm not ready for it.  Not one little bit.  Emily will go to pre-school from 3-5 half days a week to get her ready for Kindergarten and it will just be Aaron and I.  Can't really wrap my head around the future here...

And there you have in folks!  I may have overdone it with the videos, but I love you and hope you enjoyed getting caught up on all things Olsen.  I hope you had a great spring and stay cool this summer.  The kids have already come up with this years' Summer Bucket List and we have gotten started!

Lets Just Agree

Yesterday, I was minding my own business, cleaning out the shower, when suddenly I realized that I haven't done a blog post since like NOVEMBER.  Oops.  I think in the 6 years I've been blogging, I've done 2 posts in a timely manner-introducing Riley and Emily to the world.  That's it.  And Dave did the first of those two so it doesn't really count.  The rest have all been late.  The title of my post usually has the word late in it or at the least, I mention it in the first line.  Dave says I need to stop announcing my faults to the world because it just draws the focus to it.  So here is the last time I'm going to mention it-I'm always late with my posts.  Always have been, always will be, let's just agree to understand one another and still be friends ok?  Deal.

This last Thanksgiving was truly one of the most wonderful I can remember.  We started off by driving up to Lake Tahoe where Dave's parents were staying for the week to visit them for a couple hours.  Debbi is the queen of holidays-I have officially declared it so-and she had a small feast prepared for our arrival. After monkey bread, shrimp, walks on the peer and some time playing at the playground, we got back in the car and headed farther west to Sacramento to spend the rest of the day with my family there.  My cousin Cathy has a new house and Thanksgiving was our first time in it.  It was a great place and we enjoyed dinner with my family, some play time out back and even spent some time at the park just across the street.  We had an awesome time there with everyone.

WE GOT TO RIDE THE POLAR EXPRESS!  It's in caps.  Because if the kids were here they would scream it to you at the top of their lungs while jumping up and down.  Mental picture accomplished.  My in-laws surprised us with tickets to ride The Polar Express in Carson City.  You did know that Aaron is obsessed with trains right?  You have to know.  What you may NOT know is that he is equally obsessed with The Polar Express.  He watched it about hmmm...50 times in 2 months.  Not.Even.Kidding.   We didn't tell them where we were going.  We just got them in their pajamas, put their bathrobes on and loaded them up in the car.  They had no idea.  We arrived and went inside a big tent where there was a gift shop and such-they still didn't know what was going on.  We lined up.  Then we told them what exactly we were lined up to do.  Aaron didn't get it.  His eyes got big but he couldn't comprehend it.  Riley surprised me by being beyond thrilled-eyes wide, grin the size of Texas, and hopping up and down on his toes for barely being able to contain his excitement.  Then the train pulled up before us.  Aaron had never seen one driving on a track up close and he started to get very excited.  He looked at Dave who was holding him and said, "Look Dad!  A TTTRRRAAAIINNN!  Can we go see it???"  Dave looked at him and said quietly, "Aaron, we get to go ON it.  It's the Polar Express and we are going to ride it!"  Aaron took Dave's face in his hands and repeated every word back to him.  Like don't you dare trick me Dad, could this be real?!!  It was the cutest thing ever.  We loaded up on the train which was filled with christmas lights and rode slowly to the "North Pole" while they served hot chocolate and cookies and read The Polar Express out loud to the kids.  Aaron spent the first 10 minutes with his face pressed up to the window.  We arrived at The North Pole and they had houses lit up and "elves" dancing around.  And then Santa appeared.  He boarded the train and on the way back to the station visited each and every child and gave them a bell.  It was a truly magical night that the kids will never forget!

Was Christmas too quick for anyone else?  I wasn't even CLOSE to having everything ready by the weekend before.  I was out there with the crazy crowds trying to get everything done and it was ridiculous!  But we got it done of course.  We had a full house for the morning and enjoyed every second of it.  The rest of the day was spent the usual Olsen way with family brunch right after and then pan roast (my FAVORITE meal of the year!) that evening.  I know I keep saying it but really, we were so blessed this last holiday season with wonderful family and two incredible holidays celebrated.  The only thing missing was a nap for Dave and I...

Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, we suffered a great loss with the death of David's grandfather. Norman was an incredible man and a wonderful great-grandfather to the kids.  He was David's only surviving grandpa and since I've never had one, he was mine too.  It was heartbreaking.  We know without a single doubt that he is in heaven now and in no more pain, which is so very comforting.  Dave's grandma-Margie, is doing very well and we are so thankful we have her in our lives.

This picture makes me sad and is so precious at the same time.

Well...that pretty much wraps up our holidays.  I expect you won't hear from me again until Easter/Aaron's birthday but hey-I might just surprise you.  Hope you are all good and had a wonderful holiday season!

Oh Oh!  I have to leave you with one more thing.  A short clip.  A glimpse in to my life.  Which I am learning to enjoy every day of.  Apparently this kind of thing ends at some point.  Very important to remember.
